One of the simplest examples of being up in material. White is up a knight and the winning plan is to activate the king toward the center in order to help the knight to capture the opponent's pawns. In this postion, counting with the kings, the ratio of pieces is 2:1, so Black's won't be able to defend his pawns for long.
